A light fitting purchased around October last year has failed, having tested it out and the transformer has decided its had enough, as I cannot find the original purchase receipt going back to suppliers is not an option, I doubt they would have spares anyway. Steve Response Hi folks, The unit has been examined etc with nothing to indicate a safety cut out, there does not seem to be anything that can be pressed/pushed or slid. Seems like I need to wait until they are back into your stock unless you have a similar unit which can successfully replace it. Reply There are no buttons to be pressed or slid. It is part of the PCB inside the unit. Steve Response Thank you for your call earlier this week and for advice and guidance given. I have had the light examined again, I am extremely happy to report the fault was located between the two sections where the wiring separates to the Halogen lamps, now that this has been located and rectified all seems to be working correctly. When I contacted them I eventually managed to identify the LED driver part that was required to “save” my fire which was extremely expensive from their UK Spares supplier and because of the cost to repair I was on the verge of scrapping it and buying a new fire. Then I managed to find your company via a Google search for the part number. When it was first switched on it just flickered once and then switched off. The lamp was removed and wiring checked once again but still with the same results. Next, all the bulbs were removed, checked and refitted 5 at a time. The lamp then worked perfectly until more than 15 out of the 20 bulbs were fitted? With 15 fitted the lamp can be switched on and off with know issues but with just one extra bulb fitted it flickers once and again turns off. It also does not matter how the bulbs are spread around the lamp the result is always the same. James Hello, You are overloading the unit. Incorrect bulbs which go over the rating of the transformer. Steve Hi Steve Cheers for that just checked each bulb fitted and 5 of them are 20w rather than the required 10w so that confirms the overloading. The lamp is 9 years old but I guess having the incorrect bulbs didn’t help. Once again Many Thanks. John Initial Question Hello, I have a ceiling light fixture that uses a SET210CS transformer. I see that the description says it is dimmable via the primary. I installed a 40-400W, 200-250 VAC dimmer switch, but it did not work well with the transformer. The SET210CS buzzed loudly and flashed the lights at most dimmer positions. I tried a second dimmer to see if the first was defective. Both had the same results. Both dimmers are now working very well with lights that do not use transformers. Is there a different type of dimmer that I can buy for this transformer? Or should I look for a different transformer that works with this type of dimmer? We are now taking a hard line approach to this behaviour as it is simply unacceptable but is now becoming normalised in the retail world.

This is an exact match for the one fitted to our Johnson Lewis Zeta up lighter floor lamp, albeit clear plastic cased.
We have 2 and one failed within 9 months. Our local John Lewis closed so I never followed up the guarantee.
On the brink of binning the flickering lamp I swapped the dimmers and it worked.
Imagine my surprise to find the exact Hytec component listed by you.
I’m pleased to let you know that I received my order very promptly, fitted it to the faulty lamp and it works fine.
Obviously I don’t know why the original failed so quickly, giving just a flickering 12v output.
I have retained the original and don’t know if it is of interest, to test for example. Whatever.
I have appreciated your expertise in supplying this item along with detailed notes.

I am not in a good place and struggling mentaly at the moment and no doubt you read my email as threatening which it was not meant to come across as. You should still have paid me for returning the product of which is my right.
I was not happy with your response and I feel that the reviews should stay to alert people as to your company.
Many of the people responding to your reviews have replied agreeing that your email could be viewed as threatening and we agree with them as well as comments regarding our telephone number.
I am at a loss as to why you initially refused to return the product. By doing so you did not give us the chance to inspect the product as Consumer Law would permit yet you were more than happy to publicly announce that we refused to refund your return shipping.
Of course I am not sure how you expect the company to verify your claim that an item is defective if you refuse to return it.
A company must state in their T&C’s who is liable for return postage as per Consumer Law and if this is not stated then the retailer is liable.
On 11/12/23 you did return the product to us however the state it was returned in was atrocious.
You wrapped the product inside a thin polystyrene supermarket fruit bag and without any paperwork placed the item in a jiffy envelope.
You then proceeded to inform social media that you won your Chargeback however the below image from the Paypal claim disproves this.
We are very disappointed at how this sale ended but unless a customer co-operates in returning goods then there is not much we can do.Colin Lamb 21/10/23

We find many electricians simply do not understand how to test a low voltage transformer correctly.
The presumption is always to place a test meter on the output expecting to see 12v. This is a common electrician’s mistake. An incorrect reading will always be shown which then leads an electrician to believe a product is faulty.
Trying to explain this normally leads to comments such as ‘i’ve been an electrician for 40 years etc I know what I am doing’. Some electricians heed our advice yet some do not.Gary Hall 17/01/23

We have had huge troubles with courier companies since August 2022. Firstly with Fedex who had three price rises making shipping with them impossible as customers would not pay their outrageous prices and now Royal Mail who have been striking over pay and conditions since October 2022 have now been hit by a cyber attack.
This has crippled their service which means at the moment we cannot ship internationally. This attack is hitting our businesses very hard not to mention many angry emails from customers who are chasing their orders.
When we were shipping internationally many customers were not collecting their goods and simply abandoning them at Customs meaning they are returned.
We are continuously trying to find a cheaper, better shipping option for customers but all couriers are raising their pricing which is making it very difficult.
I will pass this email to all staff who no doubt will be thrilled to read and we would all like to wish you a Happy New Year.

What a service I received. I had a broken light fitting I purchased in Switzerland which was very expensive and I did not want to throw away.
I was amazed to find a company such as yourselves selling replacement transformers including the type I had.

I needed a foot sliding dimmer for a Homebase bought standard lamp and tried all the usual places with no joy. Then I found Save My Light.

Steve and David are always there to give invaluable advice even when it becomes technical in nature. Their experience shows that when I describe an issue they normally know exactly what the causes may be.

This email is to bring you good news.
In my testing I found quite by accident a fault in the lamp wiring. Quite unexpected.
It turns out that there was a very small insulation breakdown between the 2 wires within the lamp itself causing a very small short circuit.
Originally when the lamp was tested it showed the correct amount of resistance and there was nothing showing as a leak to earth.
Obviously my multimeter only pushes out a small voltage under test. What would have found the problem sooner would be if I owned and used an insulation tester such as a megger meter or equivalent.
Any way I fixed the fault and everything works fine, now I’m a happy chappy.
After the fix I was able to check the output voltage which showed up as 8.5 volts (happy with that and good enough for me).
I wish to thank you so very much for your correspondence and all your help, I’m sorry if I took up too much of your time.
So, until I need your help one day again – thank you and stay safe.

David & Steve helped me with my light that had a continuous fault. In my frustration i kept buying transformers only to blew them up without realising i was damaging them.
David advised what the problem may be and low and behold my electrician found a damaged wire earthing to the metal of the light fitting. Overtime the wire must’ve got hot and melted the wire to the light fitting.
My electrician removed the damaged wire and now the light works.

I had a light fitting of sentimental value which I did not wish to dispose of as my wife who sadly passed away of Covid last year had purchased.
The transformer had failed because I stupidly used the wrong G4 bulbs without checking the wattage.
Upon Steve advising which product I required I happily purchased. Upon fitment my light fitting would only half illuminate.
I contacted Steve again and he advised what the issue could be and upon inspection of the light fitting he was spot on with his diagnosis.
Out of the blue the next day I not only received the replacement component in various sizes to suit but also the correct G4 lightbulbs at no cost. I replaced the defective wiring component (after buying a soldering iron and a crimping tool) and hey presto the light fitting works and is saved from Landfill.
I was going to post a review on one review site but was astonished at the amount of spam and nasty reviews purporting to be from customers. Some have been posted 4 times by the same person/s.
Instead I have read the hundreds of reviews on your website and it is safe to say your staff know their lighting components. I certainly like the way your company posts reviews from customers and your response helping in what I deem as upset customers who cannot get their light fittings to work or have used incorrect bulbs, such as myself.

Transformers received and first one fitted which fixed the light a treat. Fully equipped with a new set of 10w G4 bulbs it was back as good as new.
However in the truest sense of 1 step forward and 2 steps back, by daughter was assisting me as I passed her the glass shades for a clean, from my position up on a footstool. She dropped the lot, and one broke, so I have a lovely 5 bulb light, with only 4 shades on it now. Just my luck.

It may be helpful for you to know that the John Lewis lamp purchased 3or4 years ago was available in black or white, and there was also a floor-standing version. The integrated cable terminated in a small two-pin plug (with one flat pin) which fitted the socket on HLV5022RB. A photo of the lamp is attached.Geoff olliver

Despite my insistence that the transformer sent was faulty it actually turned out to be melted wiring near the bulb holder that was as you described activating the safety cut out in the product.
I have now replaced the wiring, reinstalled the transformer and the unit clicked and auto reset.
Your supplied Guidance Notes are a fantastic read and answer everything a customer could need if they have a problem. The notes are so informative.

Clearly you guys know your stuff despite my ramblings that the light was in perfect working order.
I now understand that if my original unit was not working and the new unit you guys sent was not working then the only avenue left was the fitting itself.
My own stupid fault for not checking what the dippy wife purchased! 20w G4 bulbs from B&Q and we have been using them for years so in effect doubling the load. So this is the reason why as they should be 10w. This is why the light cuts out and then comes back on.
Your guidance notes although long are invaluable and I should have taken more notice of them instead of ‘skipping’ through them.
I have learnt a valuable lesson in that it is not simply a case of swapping a component and the light fitting will work. As you said on the telephone to me the product is part of many components and components will affect the product. You were spot on!

Unfortunately nearly every customer in the same situation as you believes the product is faulty and no matter how many times we try to explain to a customer of this they will not listen, understand or read the Guidance Notes.
It is a regular battle that we face. It is not a simple case of buying a new product and the light fitting will work again.
We have customers sticking test meters of all types on to the terminals to which they declare the product is faulty yet they are not even testing the product correctly as such the reading shown is completely wrong.
Customers instead get very angry and it ends up with customers demanding more and more products.

It would seem my insistance that the product received was faulty was found to be incorrect as Steve was able to diagnose the exact fault with my light fitting by telephone.
A few weeks prior I had installed 20w bulbs (instead of 10w) thus doubling the power of the transformer something I was not aware that G4 bulbs came in different power ratings.
Steve stated this was a common occurrence thus had I read the accompanying guidance notes I would have realised my mistake.

Once the fault or component connected to the light fitting has been rectified the unit will auto reset. Most likely detecting the fault that caused your original unit to fail.

Infact I tested your unit as my name is on the testing sheet so I can assure you the unit is not faulty.
Please ensure the safety cut out (SCO) has not engaged. If it has the unit will not work at all.
The unit will auto reset once the fault / issue / component affecting the product has been rectified.
If the original fault was not known or not rectified then installing the new unit is very risky as it can be damaged unintentionally.
We are receiving units back in safety mode as customers believe they are faulty, which is resulting in customers being charged for the retesting and redespatch as the product has to go through an extended test.
Please check the unit is not in safety mode to avoid this charge.

I recently purchased a Hy 3360 dimmer i have 2 similar lights and had a
replacement switch for one which must be a HY3360D. But on taking this
light apart the dimmer is a KD323C. When looking at this dimmer on your site
it says the HY3360D can be interchanged with the KD323C which has 4
connections one of which is a blue wire going to an earth terminal,
therefore can this earth wire be ignored. Thus just wiring live and the 60W
and 300W.

it off.
The same for the earth point. If you have no earth you can close the
terminal screw to the closed position and leave.
On the 3360D the neutral is wired externally.
Have now wired up light removing spare neutral wire and it is working fine.

Thank you for your advice re my light fitting with broken transformer.
It appears the product you sent was indeed not faulty despite my insistence it was and the issue stopping the transformer from working was a damaged, burnt out terminal block holding all the neutral wires together.
I can only guess this was done when the original unit failed and caused a surge of power.
The terminal has been replaced as some of the wiring and the light now works.

Damaged crimp hat terminals are very common. The damage happens when the original transformer gives that last surge of power before failing.

To diagnose the exact fault of my light fitting over the telephone without even seeing it is phenominal.
You clearly know your products and their features.As for the notes attached normally you are lucky to even get a scrap of paper with basic instructions on when you buy something, but your 2 pages of A4 notes are superb. The detail in them describing issues and what to do is a credit to your knowledgeable staff.
I have bookmarked you and will certainly recommend you to the trade.
The issues are mostly the same and always involve the safety cut out.

The SCO is not a fault. It is a safety feature.
Unit is detecting a fault so is shutting down once reaching its maximum operating temperature. Once cooled it resets and then the whole cycle starts again.
We call this revolving door as the procedure continues to repeat iteself.
The fault that caused your original unit to fail is still present. Most likely incorrect bulbs as this is the most common reason.
The fault must be cleared for the unit to work normally.
Please can you tell me how many bulbs you have on the light fitting and the wattage of the bulbs you are using?

It is so common.
Remove the bulbs and see if the safety cut out resets. If not, it may have damaged the unit, but on occasions some people are lucky.
Maximum on the 150w is 15 bulbs at 10w. If the customer wants to use 20w bulbs then a transformer of at least 300w will be needed, but you will need to check the wiring is capable of double loading.

When it detects an overload it will flicker / dim and shut down.

We recently had what we think was a power surge in our home, which damaged one of the transformers in our light fitting and partially damaged a second.
From the time I sent the transformers back to David for testing to the conclusion of this matter the service received was exemplary.
Infact, it was that good that I am changing procedures at my company to take your lead in dealing with customers. If we conducted business like you I am sure we would be doing a lot better.I was kept informed regarding what was going on including a full explanation of what went wrong with the transformers.
As the damage was not covered by the guarantee I did have to purchase two new transformers, but I was shocked to receive an email from Steve telling me he was discounting them by 30% as there were other customers in my area with the same problem. After checking further the fault is clearly with the wiring in my light fittings which seems to be caused by the original transformers going bang on the same circuit which damaged both fittings.
The wiring had melted and was causing a short, which as you did say to me the safety cut outs were engaging.

You need to check your light fitting for signs of wire damage, which could be causing an earth out.
Could you also check the total wattage of all the bulbs does not exceed 210w.

Both appeared to be faulty.
The first electrician could not get the light fixed and said the transformer was faulty.
I then purchased a second transformer and used another electrician from the Yellow Pages.
He could not get the light fitting to work either.
I then contacted a 3rd electrician (and a very expensive one to say the least) I explained the previous attempts to fix the light.
He pulled the light apart and found that a wire in the light fitting had melted, which he says was caused by the original transformer blowing.
He installed a new piece of wiring, connected the transformer and hey presto the light worked. He also tested the first transformer and that worked perfectly.
The electrician said that some others in his trade are not fully versed in electronic diagnostics, so would connect the transformer and think it was the transformer at fault.
I sincerely and deeply apologise for accusing you of supplying me faulty stock.
This is a continual situation that we hear time and time again.
Customers do not think for one instant that their light fitting is at fault. They automaticaly assume we are in business to supply faulty transformers.
We get customers everyday who email us to say the transformer does not work.
They do not read the guidance notes supplied with the transformer and when we tell them to check the light fitting we never hear from most of them again. This is because they realise that something in the light fitting was faulty and have rectified the problem by calling in a qualified electrician to repair it.
Yet in your case you have been kind enough to let us know and we thank you for this.
You are more than welcome to return one of the transformers for a refund.

I’m sure the switch is fine but require a bit of assistance. I’ve ran continuity tests on all the internal wiring and checked for earth shorts and all checks out ok. Unfortunatley when i introduce the switch to the circuit and turn on the continuity stops. I’ve checked for earth leakage whilst the switch is connected but all seems ok. Any tips or advice would be great as i’m sure you’ve got a lot more experience in this field than i have.

The scenario you state is one of the most common that we hear and is normally linked to damaged wiring inside the light unit caused by the original transformer ceasing to work.
